Depending on the format of your exhibit this will be the actual object, a reproduction, or a picture on the label. It can also be helpful to include close-ups of the object on the label to highlight relevant parts of your object.

This is where you provide context to the object. If you did not talk about an object in the panels or it isn't obviously clear its significance from its name you can explain its significance to the exhibit.

The information you include here will change based on the exhibit and how your object connects to the story being told.

Your object name is the first step in interpreting your object. For some items you only need a name, for example if your panel describes Eugene Field's love of toys, a object title of "Eugene Field's Wind-Up Figure" may be enough to connect the object to the story.

Make sure your title accurately describes the object, and if your object has a real title, for example a painting or book that the name you give it reflects that, (ex. Eugene Field's copy of "Shut Your Mouth").

This information should be present on any object label. It provides viewers with a base level of information about your object.

Generally this includes: author, date and place of creation, materials the object is made of, donor/loaner information, object identification, and credit line.

Here is a label template. When writing a descriptive label (and not a tombstone where you only have a title and biographical information about an object), you will want to fill in the information.

This is the template we use at our museum. The numbers are the minimum font size required for the label to be accessible to most people.
