The designer starts by drawing on a small scale. This is called a rough 

, which takes about a day to do. The designer then redraws it to the size of the kimono, which takes about 7-10 days.

The sketch is then passed over to another artist who redraws the pattern onto the silk. Once this is done, the artist checks over their work to make sure the design looks presentable and completely finished before it gets worn. This takes around 2 weeks to do.
