In Super Sandwich, players buy foods with different nutritional values. The goal is to buy enough foods to provide the Recommend Dietary Allowance (RDA) of protein; calcium; iron; and vitamins A, B, and C, as set by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1973. The first player to hit those RDAs, without going over the recommended daily calories, wins. As you explore the game's actions and rules, what do you think they tell you about the ways in which "health advice" was communicated to the public, especially to younger people, at this time? What is important about food and activity, according to this game? Are there ways you think about food and activity that aren't represented by this game? 

When players land a meal square, they may enter that meal path to purchase foods for that meal. These include French toast for breakfast, a hamburger for lunch, or spinach for dinner. When a player receives the card for that food, they must enter the nutritional value of that food onto their scorecard. 

When players land on a dairy bar or fruit stand square, they may choose to purchase an unknown food from either, and record the nutritional value of the food on their scorecard. Foods from the dairy bar include skim milk and an ice cream sundae; foods from the fruit stand include corn on the cob and prune juice. 

When players land on an activity square, they must pull an activity card from the pile. Some activities, like washing a neighbor's car, allow a player to earn money. Others, like going for a swim, mean a player deducts calories from their scorecard. 

When a player lands on the gym square, they lose a calorie on each turn until they roll a seven or higher. 

The makers of Super Sandwich included the following note for players: "Recommended dietary allowances for the nutrients used in this game vary significantly from individual to individual and are closely related to age, weight, sex and activity. Thus, for any individual, the RDA's used in 'Super Sandwich' should be considered approximate at best. In addition, the nutritional values of the foods used in this game depend on the size of the portion and can vary from one sample to the next. The nutritional statistics used in 'Super Sandwich' are available in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Handbook Number 8, and represent what [the game's makers] consider reasonable portions. It should not be assumed that malnutrition will occur whenever the RDA's indicated in 'Super Sandwich' are not met." 

When players land on a snack square, they must take a snack card from a pile on the board. Snacks include foods like cherry pie, pistachios, raisins, and oatmeal cookies. Players must record the nutritional value of that snack onto their scorecard.
