Before making your own installation, let’s find out how Lam created her work: A Quarter of Pavilion. 

A Chinese pavilion stands at the end of the passage. Sheltering underneath, one might have the illusion of being in Suzhou or Hangzhou, cities famous for the scenery in the rain.

A Quarter of Pavilion is the highlight of the “Micro Economy” project. It is hard to imagine this elegant and picturesque work is in fact a collection of old fabrics from abandoned umbrellas woven together. The way classical ideals are presented by innovative means echoes with the artist’s early approach in art.

Materials: Recyclable umbrella fabrics, along with thread and rope.

1. The artist suggested the design concept and discussed with the female garment workers the possibility of collaboration.

3. They created the work with the patterns.

4. They used a white fabric to create a sample

5. They removed the umbrella fabric from the umbrella.

7. They cut the fabrics into an appropriate size for the sewers.

8. The garment workers sewed the umbrella fabrics together.
