Provenance:
The fort garrison needed crops for feeding soldiers and their horses. This scythe (one of four found in Pit XVI) during the excavations of James Curle and is a very rare survival and is in such good condition, it could be used today. It was used for cutting and harvesting hay as fodder for the horses.
