The Last Ditch

Description

Thomas Nast's Grand Caricaturama Painting, "The Last Ditch". General Ulysses S. Grant is on horseback in the center chopping off the head of General Robert E. Lee who is on the left. General Philip Sheridan is also on horseback behind Grant. This canvas, of all in the original series, demonstrates the transition of Thomas Nast from an artist of high moral historical painting to the satire of his later illustrations. The accompanying music to the the display was "Just after the battle, Mother."
