Purse

Description

This piece of a leather purse was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The purse has slits for a narrow band, which would have been pulled tight to close the purse. Leather was used for a wide range of objects necessary to a Roman soldier, including tents, saddles, harness, shoes, clothing, belts, purses, bags, and shield covers. Elsewhere in the Roman empire, there is evidence of taxes demanded in hides. Photo © National Museums Scotland
