Photograph, Hecla Heights

Description

Black and white photograph of a square building with a tall wooden structure next to it. The building is full of bullet holes and at the bottom of the photo partially obscured is an inscription, "Hecla Heights" These were mine camp houses associated with the Hecla Mine in Louisville, Colorado, and the area was referred to as "Hecla Heights." During the strike of 1910-1914, the houses were rented by strikebreaking miners who worked at the Hecla. The houses were located on the northeast corner of what is now Highway 42 and South Boulder Rd. During strike violence at the Hecla Mine in April 1914, hours of gunfire between strikers and strikebreakers left many buildings with bullet holes.
