Photograph, Miner Statue

Description

This black and white photograph shows a Statue to the Memory of the Coal Miners, dedicated January 1977. The plaque has the quote: "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." The statue stands to this day in front of Louisville's City Hall on Main Street. When the statue was proposed, some spoke in opposition, saying a statue could not convey the diversity of coal miners, and that the money would be better spent providing services to those who had been coal miners. Now it is one of the last clues in downtown to remind people of Louisville's past as a coal mining town.
