Stereograph, Ruins in Gunnison and Salida, Colorado
Description
Stereograph of ruins in Woodstock, near Pitkin in Gunnison County, Colorado, taken in 1884 by George E. Mellen following an avalanche that destroyed the town in March of that year. The image shows the side of a collapsed one-story building leaning insecurely against a wooden plank. Snow covers the part of the collapsed roof and debris from the collapse is scattered around the foreground. In the background evergreen trees extend from the top left corner to the middle of the right side. This image pairs with accession number 84.192.1644, which shows workers outside the ruined building. Woodstock is today a ghost town.
