Stereograph, Ruins at Woodstock

Description

Stereograph of ruins in Woodstock, near Pitkin in Gunnison County, Colorado, taken circa 1884 by George E. Mellen. The image shows seven men dressed in works clothes outside the ruins of an unidentified building in Woodstock, likely following the avalanche that buried the town in March 1884. Woodstock is now a ghost town. A group of four men, one holding a shovel, stand on the left side of the image. They stand on a large mound of snow littered with debris and salvaged goods from the buildings at their feet. To the right three additional men, each with a shovel resting against their shoulder, stand in front of the ruins of the one story building. The building leans sharply to the right and rests insecurely against a wooden plank. The foreground is littered with additional work tools and debris. In the background a tree line of evergreens run from the top left corner to the center of the right side. This image pairs with accession number 84.192.457, which shows a close up of the collapsed building.
