Longshan Pottery Sherd and Replica
Description
In the Longshan period, highly skilled potters created eggshell-thin goblets. The fragment above comes from one of these tall-stemmed cups. Some goblets were too thin to even hold liquid; it appears they were made specifically for burials. They're typically found at large settlements, where the powerful lived and were buried. A few goblets, however, have been found at smaller villages. People there may have received the cups as gifts given by powerful elites to build social ties.
