There is Nothing Mean About Us

Description

Here Nast depicts Columbia, Betsy Ross-like (1752-1836) sewing a flag with the figure of Uncle Sam standing behind her. Columbia scowls at the skeletal Army soldier and Navy sailor standing in her doorway. Nast suggests the sense of resentment that has come over Columbia at the suggestion of her, and the nation’s, mistreating America’s military.
