Wilmarth had been appointed chief of the historical department to develop Colorado’s exhibit for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Richard Wetherill assisted with the exhibition as an expert on ancestral Pueblo people. After the exhibition, History Colorado accepted the collection of 800 or so artifacts as a donation. The Wilmarth Collection comes from sites such as Cliff Palace, Spruce Tree House, Balcony House, Step House, and more.
