Description
Studio portrait of James P. Beckwourth (1798-1866), African-American trapper, trader, and former slave who built a trading post that later became the community of Pueblo, Colorado. In 1859 Beckwourth settled in Denver, Colorado and became a storekeeper. In 1864 Beckwourth was hired as a scout for a military campaign against the Cheyenne and Arapaho, which resulted in the Sand Creek Massacre. This photo was shot by W. G. Chamberlain in Denver, Colorado circa 1860.
