Object Information

Date Created:

1840

Local ID:

H.3068.2

Provenance:

Colorado Magazine, Vol. XX, No. 2, March, 1943, p.80 states that a early Spanish trunk believed to have been the property of "the notorious San Luis Valley Espinosa bandits of the 1860s..." was donated in 1943 by Adolph G. Mayer, son of Leopold Mayer. Leopold Mayer was born in Germany in 1839 and arrived in the U.S. in 1870, living is Saguache during the 1880s. It is not known how, when, where, or from whom Mr. Leopold obtained the trunk. In addition to the trunk, other articles were donated to the museum at this time. It is not clear from the description of the donation if those other objects were believed to be associated with the Espinosa brothers or not. This set of spurs is one of the objects. The entry only states, " Mr. Mayer's gift included also a pair of large Spanish spurs, a navy Colt's revolver, a pair of Indian mocassins, and a pair of chapellets." Whether these objects were contained in the trunk at the time Mr. Mayer received it is, unfortunately, not known.
