Flag, World War II Service Flag

Description

A rectangular World War Two service flag. Orange, satin fabric with a blue edge trim. White satin fabric rectangle in center with two stars. One star is blue, one is blue with a gold thread center. Gold painted wooden rod with two decorative ornaments on the end through the top of flag. Two gold ropes with gold tassels hang from ends of wooden rod. The inscription "Sons In Service" stitched to center bottom of white rectangle.

Provenance:

The service flag belonged to donor's grandmother, Mrs. Lora B. Roberts, whose two sons, William & Howard, served in the Pacific and European theaters. Howard Roberts was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. Mrs. Roberts died Jan 14, 1974. Flag hung at 1641 Downing St, Denver. The service flag was meant to be displayed in window of home, with stars indicating number of sons doing military service. Gold inner star indicates son killed in battle.
