Champagne Bottle, Louis Roederer

Description

Dark green glass bottle, formerly held champagne. Typical size and shape. Two labels, one rectangular and one circular label around the bottle neck, Wehrmacht marked. Restricted sale stamp in German in red ink, upper left corner on the main label; the same in red ink in French in the upper right corner. Late King George V Royal Warrant Seal in gold leaf, upper center. Bottle is empty, no cork or foil wrapper is present.

Liberated by 10th Mountain Division soldiers first week of May, 1945 from captured Wehrmacht Officers' Supply Train in Lake Garda District. In celebration of the end of the War in Europe (May 8, 1945), 10th Mountain enlisted soldiers were each issued two bottles of champagne or two bottles of wine from this cache., Denver Public Library
