Provenance:

Francis W. Lovett was a medic with the 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment and served in Italy. On the siege to take Monte Belvedere Lovett recalled that "Belvedere was terribly noisy.... It was also the first time I had encountered the loss of identity that occurs when you find somebody you know who is dead and he doesn't look quite right any more. That impressed me then and it impressed me all the way through, and I saw a lot of it." (Whitlock & Bishop, 1992:105) Lovett himself sustained injuries during his tour of service and was awarded the Bronze Star, American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Medical Badge.
