"Be a Part of the Story" at the Louisville Historical Museum! The Museum tells the story of the history of Louisville, Colorado founded in 1878. The Museum goals are to engage the community, preserve historic collections, and share the history of Louisville as well as to refine and promote the vision for the future of the Museum campus. You are invited to visit our three historic buildings where you can browse the exhibits, take an informal tour, and immerse yourself in the story of Louisville's past and present.

Underground Coal Mining Impacts on a Small Town

Louisville (pronounced Lewis-ville) is a small City in Boulder County, Colorado at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The primary industry from 1878 through 1955 was coal mining. Today it is a thriving community of 22,000 residents with a few hints to it's mining past. As you look through the timeline, think about how Louisville would have been different if coal wasn't found here. Who would have come here? What work would they have done?

This photograph shows a baseball team made up of miners at the Hecla Coal Mine in Louisville. You can see the name of the coal mine on their shirts. Coal miners in Louisville were unemployed in the summer because of the poor grade of the coal, and spent their time doing odd jobs and playing baseball.
