In this slideshow, we will explain the creation process of Van’s sculpture for City University of Hong Kong. 

The Creation Process

Based on the HKMoA collection, this series, ‘In Touch with Hong Kong Artists’, provides education materials and activity sets designed with the aim to raise the interest in artists and art and culture in Hong Kong. In this resource kit, Van Lau will be introduced.

Bamboo stick, branch, drawing paper, paperboard, toilet paper roll, plastic bottle, adhesive tape, plastic stick, paint, hot glue gun, white glue, cutter, cutting mat, paint brush

Using Van’s bamboo sculpture series as a reference, brainstorm themes for your work based on the form of the bamboo.

Refine sketch and improve the model design. 

Paste the cardboard to the Styrofoam board with a hot glue gun.

Cut away the excess Styrofoam with a cutter. 

Draw a plan of a bamboo leaf and cut it out.

Create a pattern on the plan (optional). Then fold the bamboo leaves.

Stick the bamboo leaves together properly and colour them.

Stick all the parts together properly with a hot glue gun.
